Project Story · Olmsted Falls, Ohio

Same Frame. Brand New Deck.

This Olmsted Falls homeowner wanted a new deck without tearing out a solid frame. We rebuilt the stairs and benches and wrapped everything in Trex Enhance Rocky Harbor with a double picture frame border, then gave the front entry the same treatment.

Where They Started

A solid frame under tired wood

The wood boards, stairs, planter box, and benches on this wooded lot deck had weathered out, and the landing at the door was showing its age. The framing underneath was still sound.

That made it a perfect resurface. We kept the frame, fixed what needed fixing, and built a low maintenance deck on top for a lot less than a full rebuild.

What We Did

From the frame up

Stripped it downOld wood decking, stairs, planter box, and benches removed and hauled away.
Rebuilt the stairs and benchesNew stairs on pressure treated 2×12 stringers and benches rebuilt with 4×4 posts, ready to be decked.
Reframed for clean linesA new landing at the door, a reframed stair landing, and the section by the grill recut so every board runs clean.
Joist tape everywhereButyl tape on every joist, stringer, and block to keep water out of the frame.

Products and Finishes

What it is made of

Every product here was picked to look sharp and stay low maintenance for a long time.

Trex Enhance Rocky Harbor

Trex Enhance Rocky Harbor

Trex Enhance Rocky Harbor is a warm, weathered gray brown with a natural grain that fits right into a wooded yard.

Double Picture Frame Border

Double Picture Frame Border

Two border boards around every edge and step with tight miters, so there are no board ends showing anywhere.

Built In Benches

Built In Benches

The benches were rebuilt from the frame up and wrapped in Rocky Harbor with mitered borders. More deck options

Box Steps and Fascia

Box Steps and Fascia

Wide box steps with Rocky Harbor fascia on every riser and rim joist for a clean, finished edge.

Hidden Fasteners

Hidden Fasteners

Hidden fasteners keep the surface clean with no screw heads to snag bare feet.

Joist Tape

Joist Tape

Butyl tape on top of the joists keeps water from soaking into the framing, so the frame lasts as long as the new boards.

Our take: If your frame is solid, resurfacing is the smartest money you can spend on a deck. You keep the bones you already paid for and walk away with a deck that looks brand new and only needs a rinse.
Good Questions

Questions we hear a lot

How do you know if my frame can be reused?

We check the joists, beams, posts, ledger, and footings in person. If they are sound, we resurface. If not, we tell you straight.

Can you rebuild benches and stairs during a resurface?

Yes. On this deck we rebuilt every stair and bench and reframed two landings.

Can you match my front entry too?

Yes. We redid the front steps and landing here in the same Rocky Harbor so the whole house matches.

Have a deck with a solid frame?

We will come out, check it, and give you an honest answer on resurfacing versus rebuilding.
