Same Bones, a Whole New Two Level Deck

The frame under this Medina deck was still solid. Everything you could see and touch was tired. So we kept what was good and replaced the rest with Deckorators Voyage Costa decking, a Dark Slate double border, and KeyLink cable railing on both levels.

Where They Started

A great layout wearing out on top

This home already had a lot going for it: a big main deck off the walkout, an upper deck off the second floor, a long staircase tying them together, and a wide run of steps that spilled out onto the brick patio. The problem was the surface. The wood boards, railings, built in bench, and lattice had all weathered to the point where staining every year was a losing battle.

When we checked the framing, it was sound. That changed the whole plan. Instead of tearing everything out, we could resurface it: strip it back to the frame, fix what needed fixing, and build a low maintenance deck on top. The homeowners got a new deck for a lot less than a full rebuild.

What We Did

From the frame up

A resurface is only as good as the prep under it. Here is how this one came together.

Stripped it to the frameWe removed the old wood decking, railings, built in bench, and steps, then hauled it all away.
Rebuilt the stairsNew stairs on pressure treated 2×12 stringers, including the long staircase up to the second floor deck.
Protected the joistsButyl joist tape across the tops of the joists to keep water out of the lumber and help the frame last as long as the new boards.
Prepped for the detailsBlocking for the rail posts and the picture frame border, plus extended framing at the landing so the skirting lines up clean.
Laid the Voyage deckingDeckorators Voyage in Costa with hidden fasteners and color matched screws, framed by a two board Dark Slate border.
Finished every edgeFascia on the rim joists and stair risers, KeyLink cable railing on both levels, post cap lights, and solid skirting down to the ground.
Products and Finishes

What it is made of

Every product here was picked to look sharp and stay low maintenance for a long time.

Deckorators Voyage Costa decking on a Medina two level deck

Voyage Costa Decking

Deckorators Voyage Costa is a mineral based composite board built to stand up to moisture, fading, and stains, with great traction underfoot. Its soft, light tone keeps the big main deck feeling open and bright.

Dark Slate Double Border

A two board picture frame border in Dark Slate, the Voyage trim color, outlines every edge and every step so the whole deck reads as one finished piece.

Post Cap Lighting

KeyLink post cap lights on a low voltage transformer wash light down on every side of the posts, so the deck and stairs are easy to use after dark. More on deck lighting

Solid Voyage Skirting

Deckorators solid skirting made from the same Voyage boards closes in the space under the deck. No more lattice to repaint and a clean, built in look. More on skirting

Hidden Fasteners and Fascia

Hidden fasteners keep the boards clean, color matched screws handle the border, and fascia trim covers the rim joists and stair risers.

Our take: If your deck has a great layout and a solid frame, do not let tired boards talk you into starting over. A resurface like this one keeps the bones you already paid for and gives you a deck that looks brand new and only needs a rinse to stay that way.
Is Resurfacing Right for You?

Good questions to ask

How do you know if a frame can be reused?

We check the joists, beams, posts, ledger, and footings in person. If they are sound and built right, we can resurface. If anything is off, we fix it or tell you straight that a rebuild is the better call.

Can you change the stairs or railings during a resurface?

Yes. On this deck we rebuilt every staircase and swapped the wood railings for KeyLink cable rail on both levels.

What about the space under the deck?

We can close it in with solid skirting that matches your decking, like we did here, so you never deal with lattice again.

Have a deck with good bones?

Tell us about it. We will come out, check the frame, and give you an honest answer on resurfacing versus rebuilding.
