Building a Deck Over an Old Concrete Patio
Cracked or stained concrete does not have to be torn out. We can build a composite deck over it and give you a brand new outdoor space.
Before the makeoverCan You Put a Deck Over Concrete?
Yes, in most cases. We build a low composite deck over the existing patio, often without breaking up the concrete at all.
The photos on this page show where one of these projects started: a worn concrete patio and hot tub area. Instead of paying to break it up and haul it away, we planned a composite deck over it that fits the space, keeps drainage working, and gives the backyard a finished look.
How We Build Over Concrete
Check the Slab
We look at cracks, settling, and drainage to decide the best approach.
Low Framing
Low profile framing or sleepers keep the deck close to the old patio height.
Keep Water Moving
We leave room for water to drain so nothing sits under the boards.
Finish Clean
Composite boards, fascia, and steps give the new surface a polished edge.
Benefits of Decking Over a Patio
Less Demolition
Skipping concrete removal saves time, mess, and cost.
Comfortable Surface
Composite stays cooler and softer underfoot than old concrete.
New Look
Pick colors and patterns that match your home, not the old slab.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to remove my concrete patio first?
Usually not. If the slab is stable and drains, we can build over it.
What if my patio is cracked or sinking?
Minor cracks are fine. Major settling may need footings through the slab, which we check at the consult.
Can you build around a hot tub?
Yes. We frame openings and access around hot tubs and plan for the weight and service access.
Is a deck over concrete low to the ground?
It can be very low. We choose framing based on the height you want and the door threshold.
