A Safer, Better Backyard: Grandma’s New Deck Built for Grandkids, Cookouts, and Peace of Mind
This Hinckley home had a tired, splinter‑prone wood deck and wobbly rails. We redesigned it as a clean, code‑safe, low‑maintenance composite space with two stair connections and durable railing.

The Homeowner’s Story
Grandma wanted one thing: a place the grandkids could run barefoot without splinters, loose boards, or shaky railings. The existing wood deck had seen better decades. Paint peeled, steps weren’t consistent, rail posts loosened over time, and the whole thing felt tired. She didn’t want a “patch job.” She wanted it done right so the family could relax outside and she wouldn’t spend every spring sanding and staining.
What was wrong with the old deck
- Safety: aging timber, soft spots, exposed fasteners, and wobbly posts around the rail line.
- Stairs: inconsistent risers and treads that invited trips, not guests.
- Maintenance: constant painting and sealing with little payback.
- Aesthetics: gray, weathered boards that clashed with the home’s bright landscaping.

Our promise during the build
We treat your home like it’s ours. That means tidy daily cleanup, protective ground mats where needed, and clear communication on timing, inspections, and deliveries. The homeowner always knew what was happening next, and she felt comfortable with our crew on site. At turnover, she got a walkthrough, care tips, and the confidence that the deck was built to last.
The plan
- Remove the existing wood deck and dispose of all debris.
- Build a new composite deck roughly 460 square feet with two stair sets, flush with the patio door threshold for safe, easy access .
- Use helical piers instead of dug postholes for stronger, cleaner foundations; these are engineered to support up to 45,000 lbs and carry a 25‑year warranty .
- Frame with No. 1 pressure‑treated lumber: 2×10 beams, 2×8 joists at 16 inches on center, 2×12 stair stringers for stout structure and uniform stair geometry .
- Finish with composite decking installed using hidden fasteners and a picture‑frame border, plus PVC/composite fascia to close off the rim and stair stringers for a clean look .
- Install low‑maintenance code‑height railing around the deck and stairs (36 inches residential) for safe play and clear sightlines .

Step‑by‑step: how we built it
Protection & demo
We prepped access paths and protected adjacent landscaping, then fully removed the aging deck surface, rail, and frame. All debris was hauled off the same day so the yard stayed tidy .

Foundations that don’t flinch
Helical piers were driven to load‑bearing strata and torqued to spec. They outperform traditional concrete holes and speed up install, which keeps the site cleaner and reduces yard disruption .
Code‑tight framing
We set 6×6 posts and 2×10 beams, then ran 2×8 joists at 16″ OC for a flat, squeak‑free surface. 2×12 stringers gave the stairs consistent rise/run, so little feet don’t catch a toe .

Picture‑perfect decking
Composite boards went down with hidden fasteners for barefoot‑safe comfort. A single‑board border “picture‑frames” the field, concealing cut ends and elevating the finish .

Clean edges, closed structure
Composite/PVC fascia wrapped the perimeter and stair stringers to protect framing from sunlight and splash, and to give the deck a furniture‑grade look from every angle .
Safe, durable railing
We installed low‑maintenance railing around the perimeter and on both stair runs at the correct residential height of 36 inches, tying posts back into framing for rock‑solid feel .

Site cleanup & walkthrough
Final sweep, magnet for stray metal, and a full walkthrough with Grandma covering maintenance tips and warranties. She got a safer, cleaner deck the grandkids can actually use.
Materials & options
This project used composite decking and low‑maintenance railing. DreamDecks offers curated lines like Trex Enhance and Trex Transcend along with Deckorators options, with color families from coastal grays to warm browns so we can match the home and landscape .
The result
What used to be a gray, splintery platform is now an inviting outdoor room with two safe stair connections, modern lines, and zero annual staining. Grandma hosts. Kids run. Everyone relaxes.

Why it matters
- Safety first: uniform stairs, secure posts, code‑height rail, and splinter‑free surfaces.
- Low maintenance: no yearly sanding or sealing; just a quick rinse.
- Long‑term value: a structure built on engineered helical piers and properly detailed framing lasts and stays beautiful .
