A Roof That Turned a Deck Into an Outdoor Living Room
The deck was already there. What it needed was shade. We built a shed roof over it that ties into the house without a single post in front of the windows, then finished it with a warm wood ceiling, a TV accent wall, a ceiling fan, and recessed lights.

A good deck in full sun
This Avon family had a solid deck off the back of the house with a dry space below it, but by midday it was too hot and too bright to use. They wanted shade, a place to watch the game, and a roof that did not chop up the view from inside.
The tricky part was the windows. A normal roof would have put posts right in front of them, so we carried the load into the house wall instead and kept the only new post out at the corner.

How it came together
A roof over an existing deck has to work with what is already there, so most of the thinking happened before the first board went up.
What it is made of
Everything was picked to feel warm under the roof and blend with the house from the yard.

LunaWood Ceiling
Thermally modified wood that looks warm and natural and holds up outdoors much better than regular lumber. More on covered roofs

TV Accent Wall
A custom wall at the end of the deck that holds the TV, adds privacy from the neighbors, and blocks the late afternoon sun.

Shed Roof Tied to the House
A clean single slope roof with beams bracketed to the house wall, so there are no posts in front of the windows.

Fan, Lights, and Power
Recessed lights, a ceiling fan, and outlets for the TV and anything else. More on lighting and electrical

Questions we hear a lot
Can you put a roof on my existing deck?
Often, yes. We check the framing, beams, and footings first and engineer the roof around what is there, adding support where it needs it.
Do I need posts in front of my windows?
Not always. On this deck we bracketed the beams to the house wall so the only new post is out at the corner.
Can you run power for a TV, fan, and lights?
Yes. We plan the wiring with the roof so outlets, a fan, and recessed lights are all ready when the ceiling goes up.
