A Deck Built Right Over the Driveway

There was no yard to build in, so we built over the driveway. This freestanding Deckorators Voyage deck spans the drive on four posts and engineered beams, with KeyLink cable rail up top and a dry, finished ceiling so the cars below stay out of the rain.

Where They Started

No yard, but plenty of driveway

This Kent home sits on a tight lot, and the only open space out back was the driveway. The owners wanted a real deck off the upper level without giving up their parking.

The answer was a freestanding deck that carries its own load, spans the driveway on four posts, and stays dry underneath, so the space below still works as a covered spot for the cars.

What We Did

How we built over a driveway

A deck that spans a driveway has to be engineered from the footers up, so this one started with the structure.

Deep footersFooters dug 28 inches wide and 39 inches deep with rebar and concrete, sized for the long span.
Posts and beamsFour 8×8 posts on stainless steel post brackets, carrying 7 x 18 and 7 x 14 beams on Simpson specialty connectors.
Framed to stay dryJoists hung on the beams with blocking flush to the bottom to support a waterproof EPDM membrane between the joists and over the beams.
A finished ceilingAn OtterTech ceiling with an integrated gutter system, so water runs off and the driveway below stays dry.

Dark Slate Wraps

Dark Slate Wraps

Every post and beam is wrapped in Dark Slate fascia, so the structure reads clean and modern from the street.

Our take: When the only open space is the driveway, you build over it. Getting the engineering right up front is what lets a deck like this feel simple and solid when it is done.
Good Questions

Questions we hear a lot

Can you build a deck over a driveway?

Yes, with the right engineering. This one is freestanding on deep footers, 8×8 posts, and large beams sized for the span.

Will the driveway stay dry?

Yes. A waterproof membrane and an OtterTech ceiling with gutters carry the water away from the space below.

What is a double border?

Two border boards in different colors around the edge. Here it is Dark Slate outside and Khaya inside, framing the Costa field.
