The Short Answer

Safe Stairs Start With the Stringers

Good deck stairs have consistent rise and run, solid stringers, graspable handrails, and lighting on every step.

We build stairs with 2×12 stringers, composite treads and risers, matching railing, and riser lights, with landings where the height calls for them. A typical set of composite stairs runs about $2,800 as a planning price.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How wide should deck stairs be?

At least 36 inches is common by code. We like 48 inches or wider for comfort.

When do stairs need a landing?

Tall stair runs often need a landing. Code and comfort both guide it.

Do deck stairs need a handrail?

Usually yes for four or more risers. We build to your local code.

Can I add lights to my stairs?

Yes. Riser or tread lights are the best safety upgrade.

Can you replace just my stairs?

Yes, if the deck is sound.
