Trex vs. TimberTech: Which Composite Decking Survives Ohio Winters Best?

Trex and TimberTech are the two biggest names in composite decking, and if you’re researching a new deck in Northeast Ohio, you’ve probably seen both. We’re certified installers of both brands, so we don’t have a horse in this race — here’s an honest comparison based on hundreds of installs from Cleveland to Medina, with special attention to the thing that matters most here: Ohio winters.

The Quick Verdict

Both survive Ohio winters just fine when installed correctly. The real differences are in feel, appearance, capped protection, and price-per-look. TimberTech’s AZEK line is fully capped PVC (zero organic material to absorb moisture), which gives it an edge in freeze-thaw resistance. Trex Transcend counters with proven durability and often a friendlier price point.

What Ohio Weather Actually Does to a Deck

Northeast Ohio decks endure lake-effect snow loads, dozens of freeze-thaw cycles a season, wet springs, and humid summers. That punishes decking two ways:

  • Moisture absorption: any exposed wood fiber swells when wet and cracks when frozen. Fully capped boards — which both brands’ better lines are — largely eliminate this.
  • Movement: boards expand and contract with temperature swings. Proper gapping and fastening matter more than brand. This is an installer issue, not a material issue.

That second point is the honest truth of this comparison: a mid-range board installed correctly will outlast a premium board installed wrong. Frame, flashing, fasteners, and gapping determine how a deck handles winter more than the logo on the box.
